History
Our church, our mission-village roots and the stories of our families, told by the people who carry them.
Heritage →My greatest hope is a community-driven tourism strategy for Haarlem: one that brings new opportunities to local businesses and keeps the heritage, culture and character of our village alive for the next generation.
Welkom tuis. Welcome home.
Read my vision Get involvedI was born in Haarlem. I grew up in a village where my grandparents never locked their doors at night. I know we can't go back to those days. But I believe we can hold on to the spirit of them: the closeness, the trust, the sense that everyone belongs.
The world is changing fast, and Haarlem is changing with it. My vision is to bring fresh economic opportunities to our village without erasing its historical character. We can adapt to a new world and still keep the familiar essence of the Haarlem we love.
That is why I am working towards a structured, community-driven strategy for tourism and local business. It has to be built by the people who have lived here, with our young people at its centre. I have already started.
“We must keep the old, and not throw away the old for the new.” Patricia Bartman, owner of Haarlem Guest House
Everything I hope for Haarlem comes back to four things that belong together.
Our church, our mission-village roots and the stories of our families, told by the people who carry them.
Heritage →Traditional farming, horse carts, herbal knowledge and a way of life that visitors can't find anywhere else.
Culture →A Haarlem that visitors plan to see before they arrive in South Africa, instead of a turn-off they drive past.
Tourism →Tourism that puts money into local hands: our crafters, cooks, growers, builders and makers.
Business →Haarlem has a long story. Our village in the Langkloof became a mission station of the Berlin Missionary Society in 1860, and the church still stands at the heart of our community. That history belongs to us, and it should be told by us.
Instead of relying on outside tour guides, I want to see members of our congregation and local residents trained to tell the history of the church and of Haarlem to visitors, in both English and Afrikaans.
Our culture is lived every day. People still plough with animals here. Horse carts still move through the village, and children still ride on horseback. Visitors love to see these things, and they are worth protecting. Traditional ways of farming must continue alongside new technology. They should not be replaced by it.
Friends and colleagues have often asked me: “What is there to do in Haarlem?” For too long the honest answer has been: not much, unless you know the right people.
I want that to change. Visitors should stop and support the community rather than just passing through on the R62. They should be taken to authentic people for authentic experiences, like farmers in the fields, herbalists, bush cultivators and craftspeople.
And we have to reach visitors before they arrive in South Africa. By the time tourists land, Haarlem should already be on their list. I want people to say, “This and this is happening in Haarlem. We really want to go there.”
I don't only want to market my guest house. I want to market Haarlem. I want to market your products, your skills and our church.
This website is open to our community. If you run a business in Haarlem, such as honeybush tea, woodwork, catering, sewing, printing or building, send me your advert and I will put it here. The same goes for church events and community notices.
We can also help our church benefit directly from visitors, for example with a donation box or the church's banking details available for guests, and with parishioners trained to welcome them.
In a small village, small businesses make a big difference. Every rand a visitor spends here stays close to home.

I am forming a dedicated tourism team for Haarlem of about fifteen people or more. The team will include our young people. It won't be a loose arrangement. It will be a planned, structured group that finds local expertise and brings it to our visitors.
Find the skills and knowledge already in our village: elders, farmers, herbalists, crafters, cooks and storytellers.
Give our youth and residents practical training as guides and hosts, so they learn by doing alongside the older generation.
Meet, brainstorm and plan together how best to market Haarlem and set up systems that work for everyone.
If you have skills and a heart for Haarlem and I haven't contacted you yet, please contact me. There is a place for you on this team.
